The Mad Beauty Prep Academy Salon Internship Program is designed to provide students with practical experience in a salon environment while adhering to Ohio State Board of Cosmetology regulations. This program allows students to gain hands-on experience, explore potential future employment opportunities, and receive feedback from salon professionals. Salons benefit from the fresh perspectives and enthusiasm of future cosmetologists. This agreement outlines the eligibility requirements, responsibilities, and guidelines for both students and salons participating in the program.
To be eligible for the Mad Beauty Prep Academy Cosmetology School Salon Internship Program, students must meet the following criteria:
Hours Completed: Must have completed at least 50% of the required hours for the cosmetology licensing exam, in accordance with Ohio State Board regulations.
Standing: Must be a senior student in good standing, with satisfactory grades, attendance, and payment records. Attendance must be at least 67% over the preceding two months.
Parent/Guardian Permission: If under 18 years of age, must have written permission from a parent or guardian to participate.
Make-up Work: Must understand that school material missed during the internship will not be reviewed. If a test is scheduled on a day the student attends the salon, they must still complete the test.
State Board Compliance: Must wear a state board-issued name badge identifying them as a student at all times and carry valid photo identification during the internship.
Students participating in the internship program agree to the following responsibilities:
Professional Conduct: Represent Mad Beauty Prep Academy by maintaining a professional demeanor, including adherence to Ohio State Board standards for sanitation, safety, and ethical behavior.
Dress Code: Follow the salon’s dress code or wear the Mad Beauty Prep Academy uniform.
Time Sheets: Record internship hours on a time sheet, signed daily by the salon educator. An Internship Assessment Report detailing tasks performed must also be completed and submitted monthly.
Demonstration Clients: May be required to bring in demonstration clients to showcase their skills before performing services on actual salon clients.
Social Media: Provide a photo of themselves at the internship for use on Mad Beauty Prep Academy’s Instagram and Facebook pages.
Reporting: Submit the Internship Record of Hours and the Internship Assessment Report to Mad Beauty Prep Academy at the end of each month.
To host interns from Mad Beauty Prep Academy, salons must meet the following Ohio State Board requirements:
Licensing: Must be a licensed and legally operating salon in good standing with the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology.
Educator Qualifications: The salon educator must hold a license in the student’s field of study, have at least five years of experience, and supervise the intern directly. Each educator may only supervise one intern at a time.
Task Supervision: Interns must be under direct and immediate supervision when performing services. Students may perform any service a licensed professional in their discipline can perform, except for services requiring additional certification.
Evaluation: The salon must evaluate the student’s skills before allowing them to work on clients and must participate in an internship overview meeting with a Mad Beauty Prep Academy representative.
Client Interaction: The salon must ensure that client preparation, salon etiquette, and proper procedures are integral parts of the intern’s education.
The following guidelines apply to all participants in the internship program:
Hour Limits: Interns may complete a maximum of 10% of their total program hours through the internship. A minimum of three hours and a maximum of ten hours can be worked per day, with a 30-minute break required if working more than six hours in one location.
Combined Hours: Students may split their day between school and the salon, but total combined hours must stay within the daily limits.
Compensation: Interns may not be paid for their work in the salon but may accept tips.
Compliance with School Rules: All school rules—including Saturday attendance, a minimum GPA of 75%, and 67% attendance—remain in effect during the internship.
Discrimination Prohibited: Discrimination based on age, color, disability, military status, national origin, race, religion, sex, or sexual orientation is strictly prohibited.
Transfer Students: Interns with transfer hours must obtain approval from the school manager before participating in the internship.
Termination: Mad Beauty Prep Academy reserves the right to remove an intern from the salon at any time, without cause or prior notice.
Record Submission: Interns must submit their recorded hours to Mad Beauty Prep Academy at the end of each month to ensure hours are credited toward their total program requirements.
